Acute Appendicitis in Children



Abstract
An analysis of 284. cases of acute appendicitis in children under the age of 15 was carried out, which were treated at the Department of Surgery of Yonsei University during the past years period from Jan. 1958 to Dec. 1975.,
Anthers, having: reviewed and analyzed statistically the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, complications and morbidity applied to these cases, obtained the results as followings.
1. The disease is rare under the age of 6 and showed progressive increase: from 6 to15 years old Ratio between male and female was 1.6 : 1-.
2. Most clinical features, laboratory findings, complications and morbidity were more serious in the perforated group than non-perforated one and the differences were significant statistically between two groups.
3.The disease in more fulminant in the children than adults and the over-all perforation rate was 34 5% in the children, comparing with to 25% of adult, apendical perforation, and the perforation rates under the age of 6 was very high, 71%.
4. Early diagnosis, aided by, moderate sedation and frequent examinations, can not be over emphasized and the prompt and adequate treatments are essential to prevent serious complications and the morbidity in the children with acute appendicitis.
